My son spent a year at a Montessori preschool in San Francisco before we switched to a Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool--the Room to Grow in Rockridge, which has openings for fall, by the way!--when we moved to Oakland a year ago. Montessori seems to work well for kids who are comforted by structure and rules. My son did fine there.

reggio emilia is very art based, play based. my son goes to one. we are moving him back to a montessori program soon because we prefer the montessori approach. the current reggion emilia school cannot promise us that he will be writing/reading + all the things that he needs to be doing to be K ready. however he is very happy there, and is eager to go there every morning.

One of the main similarities between Montessori and Reggio Emilia is the self-directed and individualized experience that children receive with both approaches. Unlike most traditional schools (where a set curriculum is put forth by a teacher and the district administration), Montessori and Reggio Emilia schools allow children to take charge of their own learning. The Reggio Emilia approach is much easier for home-based learning than Montessori as it is more concerned with nurturing relationships rather than having the right equipment and tools. Because Reggio Emilia is more of a learning process rather than a method , it is easier for non-professionals and parents to implement at home. The Reggio Emilia educational approach has many benefits compared to the Montessori program.

Have you heard of Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio learning styles - but have had no idea what they actually mean? Join the club. Here is a simple break down .

They are called artful balancers in a Reggio model. They plan with another teacher, communicating with the child as well as the child’s parents to create a learning track that documents the child’s history of thought and creation. Another key difference is that Maria Montessori believed children develop similarly around the world and that her methods could be implemented in any country. The Reggio Emilia methodology believes that children are a product of their cultural environment and teachers must adapt their methods accordingly.
